CHARLES SCHNEIDER - le verre Français
A wonderful French art deco mushroom lamp in coloured acid-engraved glass and wrought iron. This model is called Dattiers (Date palms). Schneider made vases table lamps and chandeliers with this pattern. It was designed between 1918 and 1921. I show a picture of a dattiers vase in the book on Schneider by Joulin and Maier (page 94).
The base is signed with the usual Berlingot sign. A berlingot is one of the oldest traditional hard sweets from France that inspired Schneider for this signature in the colors of the French flag and the shape of a small banner.
The lamp has a height of 17,25 inches (43,8 cm). And the bowl has a diameter of 9,8 inches (25 cm). The lamp is in very good condition. The iron mount has a nice deep brown almost black patina. The base has a chip on the inside of the metal ring that holds the iron mount. Rather common for le Verre Français lamps and it is completely hidden by the mount. There is a little tolerance between one of the three arms and the central ring. I showed it to a blacksmith specialized in restoring French art nouveau and deco lamps and he told me it is in its original state and since it does not effect the stability of the lamp we saw no use in making changes. The lamp is rewired with cloth covered twisted cord. For the US I will place American candelabra base sockets.
