Joel Beckwith: A contemporary American etcher, Joel Beckwith studied art under Thomas Cornell at Bowdoin College and graduated in 1971. Since that time he has exhibited his art with such institutions and organizations as the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Boston Printmakers, Philadelphia Print Club, Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Design.Joel Beckwith's etched art has received many awards such as, the Stratton Art Festival 1997 Fellowship, the George Bunker Museum Purchase Award (Philadelphia Print Club) and the Daniel Chester French Medal of Excellence. Today his etchings are included in the following collections; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Birmingham Museum of Art, Boston Public Library, Hunterdon Art Center, National Baseball Hall of Fame, State University of New York, Albany, and Purdue University.
Beckwith's work has appeared in no fewer than 10 national exhibitions and is included in nearly 20 public collections. He's had several solo shows and has won numerous awards.
Beckwith was born in Boston in 1949. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 1971. Since then, he has been a working artist and printmaker. The characters seen in Beckwith's work come from his imagination, rather than being based on models or people from everyday life. "My approach allows these characters to become 'everyman,' true representatives of humankind who are approachable, humorous and empathetic," Beckwith says.
Beckwith's characters are often found in impromptu gatherings: in street scenes, bar rooms, and at night clubs. Most recently, Beckwith has been printing and coloring jazz ensembles.
"I enjoy places where people gather, whether working together or at play," Beckwith says.
Beckwith's etchings are hand-printed directly from the metal plates on which they are drawn by the artist. Watercolor, acrylic, and sometimes gold leaf are added by hand later to further embellish the lively imagery.
Although he's "intrigued by the complexity and character of the etching process," he's worked in recent years in mixed watercolor and drawing mediums as well.
