These figures were never purely decorative: they served as the central presence in Gwan shrine ensembles, brought out during annual ceremonies tied to the first rains, ritually washed and oiled, then dressed in loincloths, head ties, and beads contributed by the women of the village. This example carries the tradition's recognizable elements — a tall, peaked coiffure, an elongated torso, and a child carried against the mother's back, secured with wrapped fiber bindings that echo the cloth and cord ornamentation historically added during ceremonial use.
