The Jazz Cabinet
Artist and fine woodworker Peter Muny designed and built The Jazz Cabinet in 1991. The Jazz Cabinet is a unique masterwork, in pristine condition, with the exception of a small piece missing from the bottom right kick plate. (see photo)
The cabinet features rare exotic hardwoods; The panels are East Indian Rosewood veneer, and the overlays are Bubinga (African Rosewood) and African Wenge. The trim is Purple Heart from South America. The finish is clear satin lacquer.
The decorative overlay designs were inspired from musical instruments, with references to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. With a perfectionist commitment to the craft, over six hundred hours were required for the fabrication of the Cabinet. The Jazz Cabinet was specifically designed for rare document and memorabilia storage.
Peter Muny has been doing fine and architectural woodwork as Muny Woodwork for over 40 years. After moving to Los Angeles from New York City where he was a musician and cabinetmaker, Muny focused on heirloom quality artistic woodwork featuring exotic hardwoods.
Muny Woodwork and ROTO Architecture (Michael Rotundi) were presented a Wood Design Merit Award from the American Wood Council for the Nicola Restaurant in Los Angeles. Sunset, Home and Garden, Hospitality Design and Architecture magazines have all featured Peter Muny’s projects. Another cabinet from this design series called the Quartet Cabinet was featured in an interview with Peter Muny in Southern California Home and Garden (Wood Exotica - November 1988).
The Jazz cabinet cabinet is from The Collection of Stephen Hofer. Mr. Hofer has commissioned Peter Muny for eight major pieces in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Stephen Hofer’s Los Angeles-based firm, Aerlex Law Group, has represented a long list of A-listers from Hollywood, music, and sports. The client list has earned Mr. Hofer the moniker; “Aviation attorney to the stars”.
