Pale stucco buildings gather around an open road, their weathered walls painted in muted tones of ivory, sage green, warm gray and ochre.
There is a peaceful stillness to the scene, as though the village has paused in the calm of the afternoon. A few distant figures bring a gentle human presence, while the open roadway leads the eye into the heart of the composition. The beauty of the painting comes through its softened palette, richly textured surface and the feeling of memory it evokes.
Layers of paint give the work warmth and depth, suggesting sun washed walls, quiet rooftops, dusty streets and the atmosphere of everyday life. Reisman had a remarkable gift for finding poetry in modest places, transforming village views and landscapes into deeply felt compositions filled with silence, light and emotion.
Ori Reisman was born in 1924 at Kibbutz Tel Yosef and grew up in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. He studied with Israeli artist Yitzhak Frenkel before continuing his artistic education in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts from 1951 to 1953. After returning to Israel, Reisman established his studio at Kibbutz Kabri in the Western Galilee, where the surrounding landscape, architecture and people became lasting sources of inspiration.
Reisman became known for his landscapes, village scenes and portraits, admired for their simplified forms, atmospheric color and emotional stillness. His work was exhibited in major Israeli institutions, including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and the Mishkan Museum of Art at Ein Harod. He received the Israel Discount Bank Prize for an Israeli Artist in 1988 and the Nahum Gutman Histadrut Prize for Painting and Sculpture in 1989.
Signed “Ori” in Hebrew at the lower right, the painting is presented in a simple silver toned frame that beautifully complements the subdued colors of the work. A restoration label on the reverse records conservation performed in 1988.
