A beautiful French 1930-1940 art deco flush mount by the famous Paris based company of Charles Ranc (64 rue de la Folie-Mericourt). The nickel plated solid brass or bronze mount hold a shade in opalescent glass. This model is signed on the rim Ranc freres. It is model #68 which exists in normal pressed glass and in the luxurious opalescent version. The flush mount is represented as 'plafonnier moderne'in one of the old Ranc product catalogs from the 30s.
The flush mount is 13,86 inches (35,2 cm) is square and 4,84" (12,3 cm) high. The shade in thick glass (in fact it's a semi-crystal) has a weight of 5,3 kilo. The mounting is marked RC on the inside of some its components. Charles Ranc was a designer and producer of bronze lighting fixtures. He started his company in 1909 he became very successful 1925 onwards. In 1928 his two brothers Auguste and Eugène and his sister Madeleine joined the firm and it was renamed Ranc frères. In 1930 they moved from the Folie-Mericourt street to 97 rue Oberkampf. The company closed its doors just before the war.
The ceiling lamp is in very good condition. One shallow chip on the rim completely hidden by the metal mount. The mounting is re-nickeled. I rewired it with two American candelabra base sockets.
