A wonderful piece of late 19th-century maritime art, this circa 1880 Victorian watercolor painting captures the working life of fishermen at sea with remarkable atmosphere and detail. The expansive composition depicts traditional sail-powered fishing vessels navigating rolling ocean waters, while a group of fishermen in a small boat works alongside the larger vessel, hauling an extensive fishing net from the sea. The delicate sails, distant boats along the horizon, and softly rendered coastline create a sense of depth and movement, while the muted palette of sea greens, soft blues, and warm neutral tones gives the work an especially evocative period character.
Finely executed in watercolor, the painting has a sense of realism without losing the loose, atmospheric quality associated with accomplished 19th-century maritime art. Small details including the fishermen at work, rigging, weathered sails, choppy water, and distant vessels reward closer inspection. The painting is signed “S. Thompson” in the lower right corner.
The work is beautifully presented in a substantial period gold-gilt gesso frame under glass front, richly ornamented with a raised floral border. The watercolor itself measures approximately 26 inches wide by 19 inches high, while the complete framed piece measures an impressive 36 inches wide by 29 inches high. Substantial and well made, the total weight is approximately 18 pounds. An impressive wide gold metallic mat surrounds the watercolor, giving the piece a grand, architectural presence and beautifully complementing the soft tones of the maritime scene. The combination of the finely detailed painting and elaborate period frame creates an exceptionally eye-catching presentation. Good antique condition, there are some small losses to the frame's border and light age-related wear. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A striking, generously sized antique maritime painting, ready for display in a traditional study, library, coastal interior, English country home, or any collection of nautical and maritime art.
