This is an exceptionally decorative Italian Rococo Revival giltwood mirror, hand-made by Mirror Fair on 3rd Ave NY, NY in 1994, though it faithfully reproduces the exuberance of an eighteenth-century Venetian original.
The frame is conceived as an uninterrupted composition of deeply carved C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and asymmetrical rocaille ornament, creating a dynamic silhouette that extends well beyond the mirror plate itself. The pierced crest is particularly successful, rising into a dramatic plume of scrolling acanthus that gives the piece an unmistakably architectural presence. Rather than relying on applied ornament, the carving flows continuously from crest to base, emphasizing movement and lightness despite the mirror’s substantial scale.
The finish is a warm, hand-burnished water-gilded or composition gilt surface with subtle rubbing at the high points that softens the ornament and gives it depth. The mirror plate itself has developed a beautifully even foxed silvering, with widespread speckling that lends warmth and character without obscuring its reflectivity. This natural oxidation is often prized because it reinforces the mirror’s antique appearance.
The proportions are particularly elegant. The softly shaped rectangular plate is framed by a restrained inner molding, allowing the exuberant carving to command attention while maintaining visual balance. The carved apron echoes the crest, creating a cohesive composition from top to bottom.
Overall, the mirror recalls the decorative vocabulary of eighteenth-century Venetian and Northern Italian Rococo, though its crisp carving and overall execution suggest a later, high-quality revival piece rather than an eighteenth-century original. It possesses the scale and sculptural quality to function almost as wall architecture rather than simply a reflective object.
