An extraordinary Victorian Egyptian Revival quadruple-plated coffee pot by Derby Silver Company of Connecticut, dating from approximately 1875 to 1898, before the firm's merger with International Silver.
This substantial piece features beautifully executed late nineteenth-century Egyptian-inspired ornament, including stylized pharaoh heads, birds, palms, urns, geometric borders, and decorative pseudo-hieroglyphics characteristic of the Aesthetic Movement and the era's fascination with ancient Egypt.
Marked on the underside:
DERBY SILVER CO. QUADRUPLE PLATE
Pattern 1604
Stamped numeral 5
Hand-etched letter "J"
Although American-made, this piece was brought back from England many years ago and remained in my family. My mother displayed and enjoyed it as a vessel for flowers, giving it a wonderful decorative history beyond its original purpose.
The dark handle appears to be ebonized wood with light insulating spacers, consistent with the Victorian period and predating Bakelite.
Measurements:
11.5" H
9" W from spout to handle
8.25" H to top of finial
Approximately 7" wide at the body
Condition is consistent with age and use. One leg causes the piece to sit slightly uneven, and the top opening is not perfectly round. The original monogram remains, with expected surface wear and a mellow antique patina acquired over more than a century.
A striking decorative object for collectors of Egyptian Revival design, Aesthetic Movement interiors, Victorian silverplate, or Grand Tour-inspired décor.
