Vintage Chinese Round Lacquered Wedding Box Featuring Dragon & Phoenix With Floral Motif. Also known as a betrothal box. Dating from the late 19th-century Qing Dynasty to the early 20th century. Historically used for transporting gifts or food during a wedding tea ceremony by the groom's family.
The vibrant red lacquer represents love, fertility, and good luck, while the gold (gilt) accents symbolize wealth and prosperity. In the Chinese culture, the dragon represents masculinity and strength. The phoenix embodies femininity and grace. Together as Yin & Yang, they are a harmonious union and are the representation of marital bliss.
After the wedding, they were commonly repurposed as jewelry cases or vanity boxes to store personal treasures and textiles.
