Antique JELKE "Good Luck" Margarine Advertising Wooden Crate – Primitive Country Store Box with Original Illinois Tax Labels
A wonderful antique wooden advertising crate bearing its original JELKE "Good Luck" Margarine branding, complete with rich aged patina, faded graphics, and remarkable evidence of its long working life. Both long sides retain the original factory stencil reading:
JELKE
GOOD LUCK
MARGARINE
"The Fine Taste Satisfies – The Low Price Gratifies."
The lettering has mellowed beautifully over the decades, giving the crate the warm, understated appearance collectors and designers seek in authentic country store advertising pieces.
One of this crate's most fascinating features is the underside, where several original Illinois Form 219 government oleomargarine tax labels remain attached, including a surviving 25-pound Oleomargarine Tax Stamp identifying Factory No. 6, First District, State of Illinois. These fragile paper labels rarely survive after more than a century of use and provide outstanding documentation of the crate's original commercial purpose. Also preserved is a wonderful faded handwritten shipping notation from its later working life, adding another authentic chapter to the story of this piece.
Built of solid wood with traditional nailed construction typical of commercial shipping crates from the early twentieth century, the crate remains sturdy and displays beautifully. Whether used for blankets, firewood, magazines, pantry storage, or simply displayed as an authentic piece of American advertising history, it brings warmth and character to any farmhouse, cottage, or industrial-inspired home.

Condition
Very good antique condition with exceptional original character. Structurally solid and sturdy with a beautiful warm patina developed through decades of honest use. Original advertising remains visible on both long sides, while the underside retains original Illinois oleomargarine tax labels, remnants of the federal tax stamps, and faded handwritten shipping notations. One corner has experienced minor wood movement over time, leaving a single nail head slightly proud of the surface. This is subtle, does not affect the crate's structural integrity, and is entirely consistent with its age. Expected scratches, wear, oxidation to the fasteners, and surface imperfections throughout only enhance its authentic antique appeal.
History & Appeal
The Jelke Good Luck Margarine brand was produced by the C. N. Jelke Company, one of America's largest butter and oleomargarine manufacturers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the company became one of the nation's leading producers and distributors of dairy products and margarine, supplying grocery stores throughout the Midwest and beyond.
During the early twentieth century, oleomargarine was one of the most heavily regulated food products in the United States. Manufacturers were required to pay federal excise taxes and affix official government tax stamps and inspection labels to shipping containers before products could be distributed. Crates retaining these original tax labels have become increasingly difficult to find, making this example especially desirable to collectors of advertising, country store, and food industry memorabilia.
Like many commercial shipping crates, this box enjoyed a second life after leaving the grocery trade. The surviving handwritten shipping notation on the underside is tangible evidence of its continued use, preserving another chapter in the history of a hardworking piece of Americana.
