This is an original painting of a blue deer by famed Navajo/Dine artist, Beatien Yazz. The painting features a blue deer running through the snow. It is tempera on board, and there are a few instances where the pencil underdrawing is still visible (although the drawing is very light).
This is a hallmark of an original work, and not a silkscreen reproduction. The painting is in excellent condition. It measures 12" x 14.75" sight, and frames to 20.25" x 23.25" - in a single white mat, and a silver wood frame. It is protected by non-glare glass. The painting is signed "B. Yazz" in the lower right corner.
It was acquired from the daughter of a trading post owner who carried original works by Beatien Yazz. Beatien Yazz {Jimmy Todd} (1928-2012) was one of the more celebrated American Indian painters of the 20th century. His life and works from an early age have been profiled in a series of books. His contributions to American Indian art have also been widely documented in various institutional exhibitions.
As well as an accomplished traditional painter, he is the father of some immensely talented artists in their own right (including Calvin Toddy, Marvin Toddy and Irving Toddy).
His works are included in such noted museums as the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, DC), the Southwest Museum (Los Angeles, CA) and the Philbrook Museum of Art (Tulsa, OK).
