Table lamp by Tyndale of Chicago, manufactured for the Frederick Cooper studio.
Large statement piece
The Tyndale mark remains on the socket cluster; the Frederick Cooper stamp is intact on the shade's center fitter ring. Shade is original to the lamp.
Frederick Cooper, a Chicago sculptor and watercolorist, established his lamp studio in 1923. Tyndale, also Chicago-based, manufactured lighting for several of the city's design houses through the mid-to-late 20th century; this piece belongs to that collaboration.
Scaled to anchor rather than accompany, this lamp is best suited to a room built around it — the foyer console, the head of a library table, or one end of a substantial sofa where a smaller fixture would be lost. Its height and presence make it a natural single-lamp solution for a room that doesn't call for a pair, and the restrained, aged-metal finish reads well against both traditional and transitional interiors without tipping into overt glamour. Well suited to a client working in classic American traditional, English country, or a more tailored transitional scheme looking for one commanding, conversation-starting object rather than a matched set.
The body is a gadrooned urn form, ribbed vertically, raised on a stepped, splayed quadripod support over a footed square plinth. The finish is a worked bronze-and-verdigris patination, characteristic of Tyndale's decorative metal treatment of the period.
The large Frederick Cooper shade is a bell form in flecked woven fiber with self-fabric trim, scaled to the body.
Shade measures 24 inches across the bottom, 6" across the top with a slant height of 14"
Lamp measurements: Base 8" x 8", stands 33.5" to the top of the finial, 26" to bottom of socket, 11" at widest
