A highly rare and early Art Deco "Amphitrite" perfume bottle, designed by René Lalique circa 1920 and produced at his glassworks in Wingen-sur-Moder, France. Crafted in the highly sought-after, evenly colored "verte émeraude" (emerald green) glass, this exceptional piece features its original matching stopper and stands as a pioneering milestone of early 20th-century luxury packaging design. This rare and captivating "Amphitrite" perfume bottle is an outstanding example of René Lalique’s early prowess in glass design. Created circa 1920, this model virtually anticipates the peak of the Art Deco style that would sweep the design world five years later.
Unlike many of his commissions for specific perfume houses, Lalique designed the "Amphitrite" for his own Maison Lalique. It was sold directly to clients to be filled with the fragrance of their choice. While the design was primarily offered in clear glass with a stained patina, Lalique produced a very limited number in evenly colored glass. This particular bottle is the highly coveted "verte émeraude" (emerald green) version—a strikingly bold color that, along with the "bleu électrique" variant, represents the pinnacle of rarity for this model.
The bottle features a stylized, swirling nautilus motif, mirroring the mythical spirit of its sea-goddess namesake. Reflecting the strict quality standards of the era, both the underside of the bottle and the stopper are hand-engraved with matching numbers, ensuring they have remained together since their production over a century ago.
Production of the "Amphitrite" model ceased permanently by 1947, making pristine, colored examples like this an elite acquisition for serious art glass and perfume presentation connoisseurs.
Signed in the mold "LALIQUE" beneath the base.
Matching item/production numbers hand-engraved under the base and on the stopper peg.
René Lalique (1860–1945) revolutionized the French perfume industry in the early 1900s by transforming perfume bottles from simple pharmacy vials into sculptural masterpieces of luxury. His early 1920s work in colored glass from the Wingen-sur-Moder factory is celebrated for its technical complexity and bold artistic vision, marking a defining bridge between late Art Nouveau symbolism and powerful Art Deco geometry.
