An exquisite and highly collectible art deco pâte-de-verre glass vase entitled "crabes et algues" (crabs and seaweed), designed by the legendary french master gabriel argy-rousseau. Made in paris, circa 1920, this rare vessel features beautifully modeled green crabs against stylized seaweed, representing the pinnacle of early 20th-century french art glass.
this exceptional pâte-de-verre (glass paste) vase is a magnificent example of art deco design by the preeminent french artist gabriel argy-rousseau. Titled "crabes et algues" (crabs and seaweed) and crafted in paris circa 1920, the vessel beautifully captures the mystique of the marine world.
three highly detailed and nicely modeled iterations of a crabe vert (green crab) wrap around the sides of the kiln-formed vessel, emerging from a relief of stylized seaweed. The glass showcases argy-rousseau’s signature mastery of light and color, blending translucent tones to create stunning depth and organic texture.
the vase is signed in the mold "g.argy-rousseau" on the lower side and features the impressed "france" mark under the base.
this design is a historically significant piece of art glass. A comparable example of this identical model is held in the permanent collection of the prestigious corning museum of glass (new york, usa) under accession number 2016.3.9.
