A wonderful early Pennsylvania blanket chest in original red-painted surface, circa 1830s, constructed of pine and poplar with hand-cut dovetailed corners and original cast iron hinges. The chest sits on bracket feet and retains a well-fitted till compartment inside the lid for storing small items.
At 36 1/4" case width, this is a particularly desirable size that's genuinely hard to find — smaller than the more common 40"+ examples, making it ideal for use as a coffee table or accent chest in addition to traditional storage. The paint has oxidized to a rich, deep red over nearly two centuries, giving it wonderful depth and character that only comes with true age.
Dimensions: 38"W x 19"D x 22"H (36 1/4" wide case)
Condition: Original painted surface, oxidized to a dark red with wear consistent with age and use throughout. Old hinge repair to the lid, likely from over-extension at some point in its history. Fully functional and serviceable for continued use as storage or display. No musty or mothball odor to the interior.
