An outstanding and increasingly hard-to-find antique shipping crate from First National Stores, one of the largest grocery chains in New England during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Built for heavy commercial use, this crate features slatted wooden construction reinforced with wire mesh and substantial metal corner brackets, creating a rugged industrial look that simply cannot be reproduced today.
The crate retains its original hinged lid, carrying handles, latch hardware, and metal reinforcements. The words "FIRST NATIONAL" are embossed into the wood on both sides beneath the handles. The warm aged wood, original hardware, and decades of honest wear have created a fantastic patina that makes this piece equally at home in a farmhouse, industrial loft, country store display, or antique-inspired living room.
Because of its large size and sturdy construction, this crate works beautifully as a storage chest, blanket box, coffee table, side table, or display piece. The lid opens and closes properly, and the crate remains structurally solid and ready for use.

The wood exhibits scattered scratches, age cracks, surface wear, and minor separations that contribute to its remarkable authenticity. The original wire reinforcement remains intact, and the lid opens and closes properly. The iron hardware displays attractive age-related oxidation while remaining structurally sound. This piece has not been over-restored and retains the honest character collectors seek in early American country furniture.
