An original watercolor painting on artist's board by John Pedder R.I., British artist 1850-1929, "A Wet Day on the Borders" scene of eight sheep grazing on grass land under a dark gray, rainy sky, 10 1/2" x 14 1/2", signed in the lower left corner front, inscribed on reverse "A Wet Day on the Borders". The work was probably executed ca 1900. CA number 3985, CA purchased winter of 2025 from a regional British auction house.
The work has been lightly surfaced cleaned. It has been re-matted in Antique White Museum matboard, with gold line, Museum Glass and museum backing, reframed with 3/4" original Newcomb Macklin antiqued gold with black wash moulding.
Pedder was a landscape, figure and animal painter, born in Liverpool. He lived in Liverpool, London, and Maidenhead.
He exhibited works at Agnew & Sons Gallery; the Society of Artists, Birmingham; the Dudley Gallery; the Grosvenor Gallery; the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; the Manchester City Art Gallery; the Royal Academy; the Royal Society of British Artists; the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (member); and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
The Borders refers to the Scottish counties which border England.
