An exceptional example of American sporting silver from the early twentieth century, this circa 1920 sterling silver cigarette case is both a functional accessory and a miniature work of art. The front is beautifully decorated with six individually hand-painted enamel trout, each rendered with remarkable realism and vibrant color against the polished sterling silver background. Every fish is carefully identified by name—Rainbow, Brook, Brown, Golden, Canadian Red, and Cutthroat—creating a striking tribute to North America's most admired freshwater game fish.
The selection of species reflects the tremendous popularity of trout fishing during the late Victorian and early twentieth centuries, when angling was considered one of the premier gentleman's sporting pursuits. These colorful trout represent several of the continent's most celebrated game fish, prized by sportsmen for their beauty, challenge, and association with pristine mountain streams and wilderness landscapes. Their inclusion on this case would have appealed to an avid fisherman or outdoorsman, making it a distinctive sporting accessory that celebrated both craftsmanship and a love of nature.
The case measures 4.5 inches wide, 3 inches deep, and 0.25 inch high, and weighs approximately 150 grams. Produced by the Thomae Company, a respected American maker known for its high-quality sterling silver novelties and accessories during the early twentieth century, the case exhibits excellent craftsmanship throughout. It is clearly marked "Sterling" and has a wonderfully solid feel in the hand. The substantial construction, smooth hinged action, and vibrant enamel decoration and gold wash interior combine to create a luxurious piece that has remained both beautiful and highly collectible for over a century. Good antique condition with a few small losses to the enamel. There is a later presentation engraving added. There is a small gap at the top and bottom of the case that does not seal perfectly. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Originally intended as a cigarette case, it is equally practical today as a handsome wallet for modern credit cards, business cards, folded currency, or personal notes. Whether displayed in a sporting collection, on a gentleman's desk, or carried as an elegant everyday accessory, this remarkable sterling silver case offers a rare combination of fine enamel artistry, American sporting heritage, and timeless Art Deco-era style.
A truly distinctive collector's piece for enthusiasts of antique sterling silver, fishing memorabilia, sporting art, and finely crafted gentleman's accessories.
