The curved lines of the legs, the three-sided gallery, and the curved front create a calmly proportioned, aesthetically cohesive appearance. Historical context: the french-style bedside table (table de nuit, chevet) evolved as a small, movable piece of bedroom furniture for storing personal items close to the bed. Within the louis xv style, curved legs, flowing body lines, and understated rocaille fittings represented a homely design that was both representative and practical. Such chevets were often made in pairs to be placed on either side of the bed and remained a popular furniture type throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, with reproductions and further developments. Features: three-sided, wraparound gallery with a curved top edge. Tall, curved legs with scrolled feet. Design: the design follows the louis xv style: curved, outward-facing legs, curved drawer fronts with profiled panels, and brass rocaille fittings. The three-sided gallery closes off the top and echoes the flowing lines of the body. Construction and proportions are harmonious; the overall design appears balanced and formally cohesive. Function: originally conceived as a bedside table for storage and placing items. Today, it can also be used as a side table, telephone table, hallway shelf, or small chest of drawers in the living area. Dimensions: h 73 × w 36 × d 30 cm (each bedside table). Sold as a pair (2 pieces). Material and condition: wood, reddish-brown hue; brass fittings. Well-preserved with age-related wear, fine scratches on the tops, and a subtle patina. Signs of age and use are part of the historical character. Inspected, cleaned, treated appropriately for the material, structurally checked, and safe to stand and function. See less
