This exquisite mid-18th-century Tuscan Neoclassical pier mirror (specchiera) is a rare find of exceptional charm and poetic beauty, coming directly from the private master bedrooms of a historic noble villa in Tuscany. It immediately captivates the eye with its beautifully proportioned, architectural silhouette, which is elegantly broken at the top by a shaped, undulating upper profile. This flowing outline creates a perfect stylistic transition toward a delightful, finely carved openwork crest featuring a central Neoclassical urn from which two delicate, symmetrical floral and leaf garlands gracefully drape downward, hugging the curved shoulders of the frame.
What makes this piece a true masterpiece for collectors and interior designers is its breathtaking, untouched original finish and unique color palette. The central band of the frame features an incredibly rare, highly coveted shade of peach-pink lacquer. This sophisticated, soft pastel hue is masterfully enhanced by a dual-gilding technique: the frame is crisply defined both on its outermost edge and on its innermost profile by a trim of water-gilded gold leaf (doratura a foglia d'oro). This double gold border frames the peach lacquer perfectly, catching the light from every angle and giving the entire structure an extraordinary three-dimensional depth and luminous aura.
The true connoisseur's detail of this Italian lacquered mirror is its rare, authentic mercury glass plate. Adding immense historical value and authenticity is the original, untouched two-plate mercury glass (specchio a mercurio). Due to the technological limitations of the mid-1700s, casting a single large sheet of glass was impossible, which is why the mirror is divided into two distinct horizontal sections with a clean, visible original seam. The glass plates display a gorgeous, authentic oxidation and historical foxing—a deep, soft, and beautifully silvered reflection that modern reproductions can never replicate. The back of the mirror remains equally untouched, revealing its original hand-planed wood backing and period structural joinery.
Versatile Styling & Placement
with its unique pastel hue, double gold trim, and historical glass, this Tuscan trumeau mirror effortlessly bridges the gap between historical grandeur and contemporary eclecticism. It is a versatile dream for high-end interior design projects: spectacular above an entryway console or commode to immediately set an aristocratic tone, a romantic focal point above a living room fireplace mantel to catch and reflect candlelight through the ancient mercury plates, or a sophisticated touch of color above a luxury bathroom vanity.
