An exceptional pair of sculptural stacked lucite table lamps dating to the 1970s, distinguished by their architectural composition of thick, optically clear cast acrylic blocks arranged in intentionally varied, asymmetrical formations. Rather than identical twins, the lamps were designed as a complementary pair, each featuring a unique arrangement that creates visual movement while maintaining perfect harmony together.
Constructed from substantial polished lucite slabs pierced by a central nickel-plated column, the design transforms from every viewing angle as light refracts through the beveled acrylic. The craftsmanship is noticeably superior to typical production lucite lighting of the period, with beautifully machined edges, exceptional optical clarity, and a dramatic sculptural presence even when unlit.
One lamp bears a hand-engraved artist’s signature on the side of the base, while the companion remains unsigned, a characteristic often found with studio-produced pairs from the period. Although the maker has not been conclusively identified, the signature and construction strongly suggest an individually crafted or boutique studio production rather than a mass-manufactured design.
Acquired in Florida and kept in a single family, these lamps embody the glamorous architectural aesthetic that defined luxury interiors during the 1970s and pair beautifully with Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, Modernist, and Postmodern interiors.
A remarkably distinctive pair that functions equally as lighting and sculptural art.
