Robert Wathen (1910–1988) was a Louisville-based commercial artist and watercolorist who exhibited at the Speed Art Museum and the Louisville Art Center and was a member of the Louisville Watercolor Society. This signed work is a companion piece to a second unsigned Wathen river subject also available, and both are consistent with his known output of commissioned illustration art for Louisville-area river industry clients. This composition is quieter and more atmospheric than its companion, with a steam towboat pushing a long string of pipe-laden barges upriver, a truss railroad bridge spanning the background in the hazy distance.
The sight area measures 13.5 inches wide by 10.25 inches tall, framed overall to 21.5 inches wide by 19 inches tall in a matching ebonized wood frame with cream mat. Signed upper left. The mat shows age toning consistent with the companion work; image area clean. Please see all available photographs and consider them as part of the item description.
