This refined neoclassical composition combines elements of still life and allegory. At the center stands a sculptural group depicting Cupid embracing a young woman, symbolizing affection, devotion, and the mysteries of love. Surrounding the figures is an abundant arrangement of fruit, flowers, books, writing implements, and decorative objects, each carefully chosen to reinforce themes of romance, beauty, knowledge, and fidelity. The elegant arrangement reflects the taste for classical symbolism that flourished in France during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Alexandre Chaponnier was one of the most accomplished French stipple engravers of his generation. His engravings are admired for their subtle tonal transitions and delicate coloring, qualities that are beautifully demonstrated in this print. The soft palette of blues, greens, pinks, and warm earth tones creates a harmonious and sophisticated image that remains highly decorative more than two centuries after its creation. The print was engraved after a design by Augustin Legrand and published by Charles Bance, one of the notable Parisian print sellers of the period. Works such as this were intended for fashionable interiors and reflected the era's fascination with classical mythology, sentiment, and refined domestic decoration. Today, original French stipple engravings of this quality are sought after by collectors of neoclassical art, decorative prints, French works on paper, and romantic subjects. The combination of allegorical imagery, fine engraving, and original hand coloring makes this an especially attractive example. This is an original engraving dating from around 1800 and not a later reproduction. Condition Report: Light age toning and occasional foxing consistent with age. Minor handling wear and slight soiling in the margins. The image remains fresh and attractive with pleasing original hand coloring. Overall condition is good for a print of this period. Framing Tips: This engraving would display beautifully with a wide ivory museum mat and a gilt, ebonized, or French Empire-style frame. The framed images shown are for visual inspiration only. The print is sold unframed. Technique: Hand-colored stipple engraving Maker: Alexandre Chaponnier after Augustin Legrand, Paris, circa 1800 See less
