It originates from Central Europe, from the early twentieth century, within dual-purpose folk furniture.A dual-purpose piece of rural furniture, used interchangeably as a bench or as a storage chest, dating to circa 1920. The seat lifts to reach the interior, where blankets, firewood or household goods were kept.The structure is solid pine, with a continuous compartment beneath the lift-up seat and an open back of square lattice. The joinery is traditional and the construction is robust.The ochre paint shows lived-in wear, with stains, losses and the pine grain on view on the seat. The patina reads authentic, with no repainting to mask it.For its continuous seat and its chest, it serves as a hallway bench with storage, at the foot of the bed or in a large kitchen.
