Modernist 20th Century Rocky Plein Air California Landscape
A vibrant watercolor seascape by California artist Lucile Marie Johnston (1907-1994, American). Waves crash in among a group of orange rocks. The artist has used negative space of the paper to create highlights in the water and sky. This piece was most likely created on-site as a plein air composition.
Signed and dated "L. Johnston 81" at the bottom right.
Presented in a light grey mat with foam core backing.

Born in Santa Rosa, California on May 26, 1907, Lucile Johnston settled in Glendale 1930-1939, later moving to Carmel and then Pacific Grove in Monterey County, California where she remained. she managed Marsh's Oriental Antiques Shop for many years. She exhibited widely, including the California Watercolor Society, (1933). She died in Monterey on Nov. 10, 1994. Johnston is listed in relevant art dictionaries including: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940"
