The vibrant trunk, which was … Read more A festive polychrome trunk from Normandy, France, celebrating the importance of floriculture in the region. The vibrant trunk, which was hand-carved and hand-painted in the 1800s, depicts numerous flowers over a verdant forest green ground. Dark green leaves accompany the multihued flowers (gold, orange, and light green), which adorn most facades, including the domed top. Although the back side is bereft of paint, it has been faintly signed, most likely by a previous owner. In addition to the flowering vines, a tasseled swag can be seen above the hasp and lock plate, as well as a stout urn overflowing with a bouquet (this represents bounty and fertility) on the lid. The lid opens to reveal a cream lining embellished with olive, orange, and teal stripes of various thickness, affixed by a peach-colored gimp. Based on the size of the box (roughly 12” H x 19” W x 13” D), it was designed to hold small valuables, such as documents, jewelry, and heirlooms. It can still be used for storage, but without a key for the lock, most collectors will utilize it as a beautiful decorative accessory to display on a console or side table. See less
