Decorate a study, library, den, or equestrian interior with this refined antique British horse painting by Claude Lorraine Ferneley. Painted circa 1860 and titled “A Chestnut Hunter in a Loose Box,” the oil on canvas depicts a handsome chestnut hunter standing in profile inside a stable interior. The horse is shown with a finely modeled body, glossy coat, alert expression, and elegant stance, set against a softly painted background with a manger at left and a bucket and broom at right.
The painting is presented in a carved giltwood frame with a molded outer edge and beaded inner border. A brass nameplate on the front reads “C. L. Ferneley, Exhibited 1851-1868.” The reverse retains an old Richard Green Fine Paintings label from London identifying the artist as Claude Lorraine Ferneley and the work as “A Chestnut Hunter in a Loose Box.” The canvas has been relined, helping preserve the work for continued display.
Claude Lorraine Ferneley (1822-1891) was a British painter known for equestrian, sporting, hunting, animal, and landscape subjects. He was part of the well-known Ferneley family of sporting artists from Melton Mowbray; his father, John Ferneley Sr., was one of the most important British equestrian painters of the early 19th Century. Claude Lorraine Ferneley exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin in 1851 and 1853, in London, and at the Royal Academy in 1868. The artist is also listed in Benezit, where he is recorded as a British 19th Century painter of hunting scenes, animals, animated landscapes, and especially horses.
The antique painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a relined canvas stable and ready to hang.
