A wonderfully decorative Van Hassels, Brussels composition sculpture depicting a young Venetian girl, executed in the manner of the celebrated sculptural designs associated with Riccardo Marc Alexandre Aurili (1864-1932). The present work appears to be a reproduction or later interpretation of Aurili's well-known Venetian girl subject and bears the impressed "Van Hassels – Brussels" mark on the reverse.
This charming bust portrays a serene young woman wearing a traditional Venetian cap and long braid, her softly modeled face conveying the romantic and idealized character for which Aurili-inspired works became so admired.
Particularly noteworthy is the sculpted gryphon motif incorporated into the base, lending the piece a mythological and architectural quality seldom found in decorative reproductions and greatly enhancing its visual appeal.
The bust retains an exceptionally appealing aged patina with extensive surface wear and paint losses that contribute to its antique character and timeworn charm. Its distressed finish, rich coloration, and beautifully modeled details make it a striking decorative object suitable for French, Victorian, traditional, and eclectic interiors.
