She … Read more Leah Schmaman is a South Africa-born, US-based artist whose work explores ideas of connectedness to nature and immersive environments. She studied fashion design in South Africa and graphics in Israel before settling in California, where she built a reputation for large-scale commissioned works. This 2015 canvas is a strong example of her painterly sensibility, with two luminous hot air balloons drifting through a turbulent sky of orange, red, and deep blue, their trailing lines dissolving into drips and mist above a darkened treeline. The color range is unusually confident and the composition holds the wall well at this scale.

Measures 30 inches wide by 30 inches tall, unframed, oil or acrylic on stretched canvas, signed and dated lower left.
