This modernist mantel vase by Shorter & Sons was produced in Staffordshire, England during the 1950s. Crafted in earthenware, the piece features a sculptural angular form with gently undulating sides and a subtly sloping rim, elevated on an integrated pedestal base. The rich oxblood red glaze is particularly striking, combining deep crimson and darker tonal variations beneath a flowing drip-glaze finish that accentuates the vase’s architectural silhouette. Rounded stud details applied to each end provide a distinctive decorative accent, reinforcing its mid-century modern character. Designed as a mantel vase, the elongated low-profile form makes it well suited to a fireplace mantel, sideboard, shelving display, or as a standalone decorative object. The combination of bold colour, geometric shaping, and expressive glazing reflects the experimental ceramic design language associated with post-war British pottery. The underside bears the impressed Shorter & Sons mark together with model number 685.
