The upper corners are adorned with … Read more An impressive attributed R.J. Horner mahogany breakfront bookcase secretary featuring exceptional high-relief carved decoration. The upper corners are adorned with dramatic winged griffin or grotesque mask carvings surrounded by scrolling acanthus foliage, while the crest is finished with an elaborately carved pierced pediment. Fluted columns, claw feet, and rich mahogany veneers complete the striking design.
The center section features leaded glass cabinet doors above a fall-front secretary opening to a fitted interior, with four graduated drawers below. Flanking glass-door bookcases provide generous display space with adjustable shelving. A mirrored panel above the secretary enhances both scale and light.
For ease of transport, the cabinet separates into four sections: two side bookcases, the center secretary, and the carved crown.
A substantial late 19th to early 20th century piece that works beautifully as a library cabinet, display bookcase, or statement office furnishing.
Attributed to R.J. Horner based on the quality of carving, winged griffin motifs, and overall design. No maker's label has been found. See less
