this exquisite palm tree floor lamp, designed by christian techoueyres for maison jansen, france, dates from the 1970s. It features a sculptural design crafted from hand-cut and soldered brass, shaped like palm leaves with finely serrated edges. The design combines, in an avant-garde style, naturalistic details with a bold decorative presence, characteristic of maison jansen's production during this period.
christian techoueyres maintained a close collaboration with maison jansen, the legendary parisian interior design house founded in 1880, which worked for clients such as the kennedys, the rothschilds, and the shah of iran. From the 1960s onward, the firm developed a series of metal lamps with floral and palm motifs that have become icons of glamorous 20th-century french design.
concealed among the leaves are six small bulbs which, when switched on, project a warm light through the perforated brass. A piece of great design and sophisticated elegance, it brings refinement and exclusivity to any space.
maison jansen
maison jansen, based in paris, was one of the best-known and most influential furniture and interior design houses of the 20th century, patronized by royalty and high society. It was founded in 1880 by the dutch designer jean-henri jansen (1854–1928), who initially purchased existing antiques and hired external cabinetmakers to produce furniture to fulfill private commissions. Soon, in the 1890s, the company began manufacturing furniture in-house, gaining a strong international reputation. Its most sought-after pieces reflected the influence of antique designs from the louis xiv, louis xvi, directory, and empire periods, as well as objects jansen encountered during his travels to japan and turkey. By the early 20th century, around 1920, maison jansen had offices worldwide, including in london, new york, buenos aires, havana, cairo, prague, rome, and rio de janeiro. Furthermore, stéphane boudin (1888–1967) joined the company as director and chief designer. In 1930, maison jansen's five-story workshop in paris employed over 700 highly skilled artisans and worked with many renowned designers, including pierre delbée, carlos ortiz-cabrera, francis chaillou, serge robin, henri samuel, claude mandron, arthur kouwenhoven, and others.
maison jansen's design aesthetic was progressive and countercultural, even as the firm specialized in high-end reproductions. It drew influences from a wide range of styles, such as bourbon court, art nouveau, art modern, and even mid-century modern, from which it borrowed forms, colors, and materials. In 1989, sixty years after its founder's death, it closed its doors. Today, maison jansen designs are highly sought after by collectors.
