A beautiful and increasingly rare example of Japanese garden design, this antique cast iron moon lantern (tōrō) dates to the Meiji era, circa 1880–1910. Hand-cast over 125 years ago, it features a spherical form with intricate hand-pierced openwork that creates stunning patterns of light and shadow when illuminated.
The lantern is decorated with traditional auspicious motifs, each carefully cut into the iron by hand. A hand-forged hanging loop and antique chain allow it to be suspended from a garden hook, tree branch, or beam, while three cast iron feet make it equally beautiful displayed on a tabletop, stone pedestal, or within a Zen garden.
At some point in its history, the lantern was converted to electric with a porcelain socket and long cord woven through the chain. The light is in working order; however, as with all antique lighting, I recommend having it inspected by a qualified electrician before use. The electrical components can also be removed if you prefer to return the lantern to its original purpose as a candle-lit garden lantern.
This is a one-of-a-kind piece that brings timeless character to Japanese, Wabi-Sabi, Zen, or Asian-inspired interiors and gardens.
