This large, handsome engraving entitled Washington and His Generals
depicts this historic event. Washington is shown in the center of the image, surrounded by his generals in Fraunces Tavern. George Washington's farewell gathering with his generals at Fraunces Tavern in New York City in 1783, following the Revolutionary War's conclusion. The monumental composition captures this historic moment with dramatic intensity, featuring Washington in a pose adapted from Jean-Antoine Houdon's renowned statue in Virginia's State Capitol.
Published by Emil Seitz in New York in 1870, the print became an iconic representation of American patriotic history and the founding generation.
Ritchie's work remains significant for its meticulous historical detail and its role in preserving and popularizing important episodes from America's revolutionary past.

It was unknown at the time that in only six years, the Father of Our Country
would be called out of retirement to serve as the first President of the United States!
