Wayne Thiebaud ( 1920 - 2021 ) is an American painter widely known for his luscious handling of paint, and brilliant colorful palette of works depicting commonplace objects that combined sensuousness, nostalgia and a hint of melancholy. Thiebaud is associated with The Pop Art Movement because of his interest in objects of mass culture. Although his early works, executed during the 1950's and 1960's, slightly predate the works of classic Pop artists. He uses heavy pigment and exaggerated colors to depict his subjects, and the well defined shadows characteristic of advertisements are almost always included in his work. Art works by Thiebaud are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums.
The " Summer Days " exhibition organized in conjunction with Thiebaud's family and The Wayne Thiebaud Foundation presents works from multiple decades of the artist's career. The exhibit and this accompanied volume offers a nostalgic look at American life passing through the heat of the summer season. Candy-coated impasto, dramatically cast shadows, and innovative use of perspective define the rigor of the artworks depicting cakes, ice creams, bathing suits, and beach scenes.
In Summer Days, the artist's paintings play with both present and past, inviting viewers to relax amongst the scenes of warmth, indulgence, and distant serenity. Highlighting his interest in familiar lighthearted subjects, this exhibition gestures at Thiebaud's interest in the delights of the quintessentially American summer experience, a nostalgia gently brings the viewer into the season's space, readying them for warmer days ahead.
