A rare example of Japanese Shunga (erotic) art executed as a kind of ukiyo-e in an original woodblock print format. "Shunga" means "picture of spring" where "spring" was used a a common euphemism for sexual activity.
The Shunga style reached its height in the Edo period (1603 - 1867), but was repeatedly suppressed by governing bodies. Following the Kyoho Reforms in 1772, Shunga art went underground and were produced for private use such as this piece was most probably part of a personal Pillow Book.
Produced probably around 1880, this example features the rare depiction of a female in the dominating position during sex.

Print is 4 inches wide x 6 inches high.
It is simply framed with glazing, matting and black wood of 11 inches wide x 13 inches high.
