Six volumes. 8vo; 4448 pp. Fine binding in later 20th century red half morocco, illustrated with plates of facsimiles and maps (many folding); charts and tables, light spotted end leaves of volumes (I, II & IV); Post war "Economy Standards" paper, proved highly prone to spotting. Near fine.

WC was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 1953 in considerable part for his war memoirs and no less his "brilliant oratory defending exalted human values". Despite his disappointment in not winning the Peace Prize, he thanked the Swedish Academy humbly. WC, "I hope you have not been biased in any way in your judgement of my literary qualities," he expressed to Ambassador Hägglöf. (Novelist politicians, 9 May). And despite the earlier American editions release of WC's war memoirs, he viewed the UK Cassell editions as definitive, distinguished by the final proof corrections of his work.
