The form is a low, dome-shouldered vessel with a narrow compressed neck, wheel-thrown in stoneware and finished in a rich iron-brown glaze with dramatic black tenmoku-style brushwork running diagonally across the shoulder. The unglazed foot ring reveals a coarse, sandy stoneware body. The glaze breaks beautifully where it meets the raw clay at the base, a hallmark of confident, kiln-aware studio work.

The brushwork is gestural and deliberate, suggesting influence from the Japanese folk pottery aesthetic that dominated serious American studio ceramics in the 1970s. The form itself, squat and grounded with a pinched neck, reads equally well as a weed pot or a standalone sculptural object. Signed in white slip to the underside, dated 1979. See less
