A carved Renaissance style replica with oak blanket chest (cassone), purchased in the early 1930s, with bold and exuberant carved … Read more A carved Renaissance style replica with oak blanket chest (cassone), purchased in the early 1930s, with bold and exuberant carved decoration of exceptional quality. The front face is divided into two large carved panels, each presenting a symmetrical composition of scrolling acanthus leaves, strapwork medallions, and interlaced foliate motifs.
The lower edge of the chest is framed by a continuous carved rope-twist or gadrooned molding frieze, adding horizontal weight and movement. The chest stands on four substantial carved lion paw or claw feet — a signature element of Renaissance and early Baroque furniture design throughout Europe. The heavy flat lid, hinged at the back, opens to reveal generous interior storage.

Acquired in Switzerland in the 1940s this piece has been in my family for nearly a century.
