An elegant and beautifully preserved pair of antique French hand-colored engravings from the celebrated Monument du Costume series, depicting refined scenes of fashionable 18th-century French society.
The engravings are titled “L’Occupation” and “La Promenade du Matin”, after designs by Swiss artist Sigmund Freudenberger and engraved by Charles-Louis Lingée, one of the accomplished French engravers of the late eighteenth century. Both retain their original French titles, engraved verses, and Paris publisher’s line, “A Paris chez Buldet, rue de Gesvres.”
Presented in matching giltwood ribbon-and-bow frames dating to the early 20th century, the pair has exceptional decorative presence while preserving the charm and elegance of Rococo France. The delicate hand coloring remains vibrant, with wonderful detail throughout the costumes, furnishings, architecture, and figures.
These engravings come from one of the most influential print series of the eighteenth century, illustrating the fashion, etiquette, and daily life of the French aristocracy immediately before the Revolution. Works from this series are represented in major museum collections worldwide.
Condition is very good for age. Prints show expected age toning consistent with antique engravings. Frames display attractive patina with minor wear appropriate to age. The original backs remain intact and the prints have not been removed from their frames.
A beautiful statement pair for traditional, French Country, Louis XVI, Rococo, Neoclassical, or Grand Millennial interiors, and an excellent addition to any collection of antique European prints.
Approximate Date: Engravings after the 1774 edition of Monument du Costume; framed circa 1900–1930.
Sold only as a matched pair.
