The armchair is crafted in the Louis XV style and belongs to the cabriolet-style armchair type, featuring a curved, slightly tapered backrest. The continuous, flowing lines, the cabriolet legs, and the subtly placed floral carvings on the crowning of the backrest and the base of the legs combine to create a formally cohesive and well-proportioned piece of furniture.
Historical Context: The cabriolet-style armchair originated in the Louis XV style as a light, freestanding piece of furniture. Unlike the "à la reine" armchair with its flat backrest placed against the wall, the concave cabriolet backrest was designed for changing seating positions and for the convivial atmosphere of salons. Such armchairs were part of the movable furnishings of prestigious living rooms and reception rooms, combining aesthetic appeal with everyday usability. Design: The design follows the Louis XV style with its emphasis on flowing, continuous lines. Characteristic features include the forward-splayed convertible legs, the concavely curved convertible backrest, and the symmetrically placed floral motifs as ornamental accents. The carvings are used sparingly and are subordinate to the overall contours.
Function: Originally, the convertible armchair served as a prestigious salon chair in bourgeois and aristocratic living rooms. Today, it is suitable as a standalone accent chair or reading chair.
Dimensions: Height 84 cm × Width 59 cm × Depth 49 cm, seat height 40 cm. Material and condition: Upholstered in royal blue velvet, padded and finished with brass decorative nails. Well-preserved with age-related wear; the frame is age-appropriate and stable. Signs of age and wear are part of its historical character.
