Signed stoneware sculpture by Claude Horan (1922–2014), an influential Hawaiian ceramic artist and professor emeritus of art at the university of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Executed in an expressive female figure form, the sculpture combines wheel-thrown and hand-modeled construction with a rugged earth-toned surface characteristic of Horan's studio practice. Measuring approximately 14 inches in height, the abstracted figure reflects the organic modernist aesthetic that shaped Hawaii's postwar studio pottery movement.
Horan taught at the university of Hawaiʻi from 1947 to 1978, where he played a significant role in the development of Hawaiian studio ceramics and mentored artists including Toshiko Takaezu and Joseph Hysong. Signed by the artist, this sculpture represents an important example of twentieth-century Hawaiian studio pottery and American modernist ceramic sculpture.
