Antique Early 19th Century or Late 18th century Tibetan Manjushri Thangka – Bodhisattva of Wisdom in Custom Silver Gilt Frame
Rare hand-painted Tibetan Buddhist Thangka of Manjushri (Mañjuśrī) with traditional purple silk brocade, professionally framed in a large custom silver gilt Frame.
In Buddhist Tibet, patrons and monks commissioned thangka art, or sacred painting, to focus their meditations and prayers. This late 18th to early 19th-century Tibetan Thangka, painted in rich gold, purple, green, orange, and blue mineral pigments, still maintains incredible vibrancy after more than two centuries. Offering a beautiful and spiritually significant antique Tibetan Thangka of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom. Date: Late 18th to early 19th century (Tibetan/Nepali Newari-influenced style).
Medium: Hand-painted on cotton canvas using traditional natural mineral pigments and gold detailing.
Mounting: Original-style purple silk brocade with gold borders and subtle dragon/cloud motifs — complete with top and bottom hanging flaps.
Framing: Professionally presented in a custom silver gilt frame with black linen inner border. Museum-quality presentation, ready to hang. Iconography (Classic and finely executed):Central youthful golden-orange Manjushri seated in royal ease on a lotus throne.
Right hand holds the flaming sword of wisdom (cutting through ignorance).
Left hand holds a lotus stem supporting the Prajñāpāramitā sutra (Perfection of Wisdom ).
Surrounded by vibrant clouds, rainbow arcs, and four smaller attendant deities in the corners.
Rich, detailed landscape base with lotuses and offerings.
The central figure is Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom, seated gracefully in Lalitasana (the royal ease posture). This position signifies a perfect balance between relaxation and readiness — embodying both serene wisdom and dynamic action. The painting is executed on cotton canvas with fine brushwork and abundant gold detailing — hallmarks of high-quality Newari-influenced Tibetan workshop production. Its original purple silk brocade mounting with gold borders remains intact and beautifully preserved. This important and treasured piece has been appropriately framed with respect to its delicate nature in a large custom silver gilt frame with black linen inner border — an elegant, museum-quality presentation that showcases the thangka while making it ready to display.
Dimensions: Frame: 49" wide × 38" high × 2" deep
Visible Opening: 32" wide × 43" high
Painted area: approx. 20 1/2" × 27 1/2"
Condition: Very good for its age. The pigments remain bright and stable, gold detailing is strong, and the central image shows no significant losses. No major losses, tears, or flaking on the central image. The custom frame is in Good condition. The brocade and canvas reverse exhibit natural, expected age-related wear consistent with traditional rolled storage. This Thangka is both a powerful spiritual tool for invoking wisdom, clarity, and insight, and a significant example of Himalayan religious art.
Provenance: Private collection. No known inscriptions or seals visible, but the style, pigments, brocade, and aging are consistent with high-quality workshop production from the period most likely a commissioned piece.
