Eight solid green jade panels with pierced open work, floral & lotus motifs throughout - the carved jade is translucent light green and of a good quality. The box has dovetailed construction with high quality handle and engraved butterfly-form brass/bronze fittings & leaf style door pulls.
Designed as a miniature Chinese cabinet with hinged doors opening to reveal 4 green silk-lined drawers (for both rings and bracelets) and a larger drawer at the bottom with secret lower compartment.
A very nice example of Chinese Jewellery storage boxes featuring layers of decorative and symbolic elements. The jade panels alone are valuable in themselves.
This would make a super gift or present.
Mid-20th Century. Republic. Small metal plaque on lower back, indicating made in the great city of Shanghai.
Condition is excellent with only minor signs of wear.
