A striking example of mid-century Murano sommerso glassmaking at monumental scale, this heavy vase was handblown by Maurizio Asti for ARS Cenedese Vetri, one of Murano's most prestigious furnaces. The sommerso technique — achieved by submerging layers of colored glass within thick crystal — produces the luminous aqua and cobalt core that appears to float suspended inside the clear glass body. The form is architectural and restrained, letting the depth and play of color do the work.
Cenedese has been at the forefront of Murano glassmaking since 1946, and Asti, who joined the furnace in 1977, became one of its most accomplished sommerso masters. At over 10 inches tall and nearly 15 pounds, this piece sits firmly in the upper register of what the sommerso form can achieve.
