This is an antique American primitive dry sink made of distressed brown painted pine wood and fitted with a cobalt blue enameled cast iron sink with a drain. The piece measures 36.5” wide, 20.25” deep, and 34.75” tall. The sink is about 5” deep. It’s a charming primitive antique that could be used for many different purposes. It could be transformed into a bathroom vanity, a planter stand, or even as a outdoor potting table.
The dry sink is made of solid pine wood planks and painted brown with an authentically aged distressed finish. The cabinet has a single door with an East Lake style bronze turn latch that looks similar one models manufactured by Branford Lock Works, a New Haven, CT, based lock shop from the 19th century. The door opens to reveal a spacious closed storage space that was later fitted with a drain pipe that would empty into a basin that could then be removed and emptied. The cast iron sink has what looks like an original enameled finish in cobalt blue with a drain. There is writing on the back of the dry sink that says (as far as I can make out): “R.W. McFarland | Dakota.” [Fun Fact: North Dakota and South Dakota were originally united as a single entity called the Dakora Territory in 1861 and was officially split into two states in 1889.]
The 19th century era dry sink is in very good antique condition. The cabinet is sturdy, and the door hinges and turn latch work well. The cast iron sink and drain appear to be intact, but have not been tested for water use. Signs of wear include scratches, wood losses, and repairs. Some rust and finish loss on the cast iron sink. Please see photos for more details about the condition of the cabinet and sink.
