Hand painted and signed J. Birbeck Sen. (Joseph Birbeck Senior, born 1862). Birbeck was known for his fish, game-bird and landscape scenes. Each plate features a different fish, and is signed by Birbeck, with each fish type noted on the reverse of some plates, and on the front of others. They are round with slightly scalloped rim, hand-painted and glazed porcelain, with a raised decorative edge, and gold gilding trim on front and back. The plates bear both the English maker's mark and Tiffany's esteemed retailer stamp.

These plates came from an estate that was once owned by Vincent Astor.

Cauldon China (rooted in the Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. firm) was recognized for producing some of the finest English ceramics. Tiffany & Co. partnered with elite international manufacturers, utilizing Cauldon to create custom and exclusive china patterns for their New York clientele. These items are prized today for their exceptional hand-painted details, heavy gilding, and intricate motifs.

Joseph Birbeck was born into a distinguished family of ceramic painters. An earlier member of the Birbeck family also named Joseph painted at the Coalport factory at the beginning of the 19th century. Birbeck painted many fine sets of dessert and service plates for the North American market. His subject matter ranged from flowers, Alpine and Highland scenery to landscapes after Turner. Birbeck was noted for his studies of birds and fish and was particularly admired for his underwater aquatic effects and misty landscapes with beautiful atmospheric skies. See less
