A striking and finely executed Asian silk woven panel depicting two Flycatcher birds in an intricate forest setting — one alert on a branch, one landing amid a floral groundcover — rendered in an exceptionally refined woven textile technique with extraordinary feather and botanical detail.
The composition is dense and luminous: a towering gnarled tree anchors the scene, surrounded by flowering branches in plum and mauve, teal-accented foliage, and a deeply eroded Scholar's rock (太湖石) — a classic symbol of scholarly refinement in East Asian art. The muted, sophisticated palette of grey, plum, rouge, and teal gives the work an elegance rarely seen in decorative export textiles.
Kesi (緙絲, "cut silk") is one of China's most technically demanding textile arts, in which each color is woven from a separate bobbin to create painterly precision impossible in other weaving traditions. Museum examples of near-identical subject matter — birds amid flowering trees and Scholar's rocks — are held in the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery of Art.
The panel bears the artist's chop seal (印章) in the lower left corner with an accompanying ink signature — a mark of serious artistic attribution rather than anonymous commercial production.
Custom professionally framed by Accent Picture Framing, Darien, CT in a parcel gilt frame with deep plum backing and plexiglass glazing — presentation is exceptional.
