A rare antique decorative example early 19th-century derby porcelain, this impressive centrepiece basket combines the refined aesthetics of japanese kakimon two quails- decoration with the craftsmanship of one of england’s most celebrated porcelain factories.
the basket is beautifully hand-painted with vibrant iron-red enamels, cobalt blue rockwork, stylised flowers and delicate foliage against a crisp white ground. The distinctive rectangular lobed form is enriched by graceful scroll handles and finely modelled gilded lion’s head masks positioned at each corner, lending the piece remarkable visual presence.
inspired by japanese kakiemon porcelain imported into europe during the late 17th and 18th centuries, derby’s interpretation became highly prized among georgian and regency collectors. The asymmetrical composition, generous white space and vivid enamel palette are characteristic of this enduring decorative tradition.
the base bears the derby crown and d mark, used between 1784 and 1825. The style of decoration and mark suggest a date of approximately 1820–1825.
